IR HiRel has introduced the SMD-0.5e, an enhanced version of their legacy SMD-0.5 package, which addresses the issue of thermal mismatch in power electronic applications. The SMD-0.5e is a more thermally efficient alternative that eliminates leads, promotes product longevity, and requires no layout change. The redesign solves the problem of stress cracking caused by thermal expansion differences between the package and PCB, while minimizing thermal and electrical resistance. The SMD-0.5e has been qualified through testing and offers a cost-effective, drop-in compatible alternative to the SMD-0.5. This new package is particularly useful for power electronic applications in satellites and spacecrafts.
