Frequently Asked Questions

Logistics Accordion

Avnet’s device programming services are an integrated part of the product pipeline, from new device to customized solution. Any lead time provided to you as part of your order will include the programming/modification stage, so you can plan your production schedules around our services. With capacity for hundreds of millions of devices per year, we are confident we can accommodate any order size and integrate our device programming services into your supply chain, from prototype to mass production.

We understand that software or firmware can change throughout a product’s lifecycle, and our device programming services are designed with that need in mind. Once approved by you, a given First Article setup is locked, and we can make no changes without your updated approval, at a minimum. Depending on the change, we may produce an entirely new First Article setup for you to verify. Our first article process is designed to support multiple revisions of the same product running through our production process at the same time, without any chance of contamination. We can support your build at any stage of its lifecycle, for as long as you need it to be active. Our robust quality processes ensure repeatability and conformance to the approved First Article.

Avnet’s device programming services are flexible and comprehensive. Any of our device modification services can be applied to customer-owned inventory, even for parts that are not on an Avnet linecard. If a device is re-programmable, we can even re-process parts that have already been programmed. All of our processing is the same, including adherence to moisture-sensitivity guidelines, regardless of whether we supply the device or not, however, because we do not own the COI material, we handle non-conforming material differently.

Any device that fails a verification step is considered non-conforming material. Customer-owned material is processed in the same manner as Avnet-owned material, however, there are a few key differences. Any material that is determined to be non-conforming on receipt is stopped by our quality process and placed on hold. In the case of customer-owned material, we need customer instructions regarding disposition of the material, which may impact completion dates.

Our standard process includes methods for handling in-process failures. For customer-owned material, devices rejected during production are segregated, logged, clearly marked, and returned to the customer according to their requirements. If a customer provides extra devices to account for in-process failures, we can also replace the rejected devices so that a full quantity of passing devices are shipped. We can also dispose of the non-conforming material, if requested.
