With cities becoming more densely populated, the need for ongoing analysis of the ambient environment will be greater than ever. One of the biggest concerns is ensuring that the highest levels of air quality are maintained in both outdoor and indoor settings. Air composition needs to be checked to safeguard against high quantities of carbon, as well as particulates and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The sensors assigned for this work can be positioned in remote locations, such as on lamp posts or attached to the sides of buildings, or integrated directly into HVAC systems. Such sensor hardware needs to be supported with optimised communication capabilities.

In addition to environment monitoring, there will be increasing utilisation of surveillance technology in the smart cities of the future. This will support intelligent street management, crime prevention, crowd control, traffic classification, tolling, the determining of road conditions, and accident monitoring. To back up the imaging data captured by cameras, sophisticated processing technology will be needed. In the vast majority of cases, artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms will be leveraged here, thereby enabling rapid automated responses.

EBV has a wide-ranging portfolio of components that it can provide to customers for environment monitoring and surveillance purposes. These cover:

  • Sensors
  • Connectivity
  • Processing Solutions

Sensors

The breadth of sensor devices needed for environment monitoring that EBV offers encompasses parameters like air quality, temperature and humidity measurement. In addition to these, we have a comprehensive selection of image sensors, from smaller format lower resolution devices up to high resolution options. There are also RF solutions intended for applications like parking management so that available car parking spaces in the vicinity can be quickly located.

Connectivity

Communication can be undertaken via LPWAN or cellular IoT wireless technologies in the case of remotely located sensors and cameras. Conversely, wireline communication, like KNX or Ethernet, will be more applicable in the case of building automation implementations.

Processing solutions

EBV customers are able to choose from various FPGA, SoC and MPU solutions for processing all the data that is acquired by the sensing and imaging devices. There are also embedded vision development tools available.
