Industrial IoT (IIoT) will be the foundation of Industry 4.0 implementations. Projections from Accenture suggest that it could add over $14 trillion to the global economy by 2030. Large-scale distributions of IIoT nodes will be responsible for the acquisition of data. Depending on its time sensitivity and the bandwidth constraints involved, this data will either be acted upon through edge-based processing resources or passed back to the cloud. The compiled datasets will be used to examine workflows, boost operational efficiency levels, improve product quality, monitor operational performance parameters, track warehouse assets, determine places within the system that are in need of maintenance or assure worker safety. The greater the numbers of nodes that the network comprises, the larger the attack surface that malicious third parties can attempt to breach, so strong security measures need to be taken.
