Trends: Wireless connectivity

Wireless communication is an important part of everyday life in the broad field of consumer electronics where Bluetooth, BLE, WLAN and other RF technologies already play a significant role. EBV Elektronik identified the most exciting trends in the sectors of:

ISM Sub 1GHz

A wireless version of Mbus standard covered by innovative three wire connections using EBV chip Hermes

In the frequency bands 169 MHz and the frequency band around 868 MHz, the standard wireless M-bus operates. In contrast to the wired version of M-bus, the wireless M-bus is also suited to the operation of battery-powered devices in the context of the integration of energy meters (check Download Area). The specifications of the wireless M-bus are set in EN13757-4 (for the modes S, T and R), whereby the standard is suitable for both uni-directional and bi-directional connections.

ZigBee / IEEE 802.15.4

Based on the IEEE 802.15.4 standard, the industry standard, ZigBee, allows data communication over short distances up to a maximum of 100 metres (in many cases only up to about 10 metres) at extremely low energy consumption

The worldwide standard operates in the frequency band around 2.4 GHz, but there are also local variants, which send data packets at 915 MHz (in America) or at 868 MHz (in Europe). An AES-128 method is used for the encryption. EBV Elektronik has ZigBee products from the ranges of many different manufacturers.

Bluetooth and BLE

Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) is ready for new age low energy IoT sensors riding on smart phone applets as Intelligent Gateways

In the context of Bluetooth 4.0, that is also called Smart Bluetooth, low energy protocol stacks are available for the first time through Bluetooth, through which low-power Bluetooth with a particularly low energy consumption can be implemented. EBV Elektronik provides its customers with appropriate low-power Bluetooth chips from various manufacturers.

GSM / UMTS /LTE

GSM/GPRS is a proven concept of any meter reading operator

When it comes to transference over longer distances, then the classic mobile network can also be used, either via GSM or GSM extension GPRS that was created specifically for data communication. With various chip solutions, EBV Elektronik supports its customers in the implementation of this proven and extremely widespread transmission technology.

GNSS

Combined access to GPS and GLONASS can improve location accuracy, reliability and speed

From differences in the propagation time for signals transmitted from various navigation satellites to the Earth, a GPS receiver calculates the current location co-ordinates. Nowadays anyone who wants to use GPS data, uses a complete GPS module; but even more complex systems are now used in cars: roof-mounted ‘shark fin’ housings (so-called because of their appearance) contain a mobile radio, a satellite radio, an AM/FM-receiver and a GPS receiver in the smallest of spaces, often with a low-noise amplifier (LNA) behind the GPS antenna to boost the signal strength or the reception quality.

Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi® is a key technology in driving the Internet of Things (IoT) by enabling devices to connect directly to each other or to broader networks to deliver the information needed

EBV Elektronik provides solutions from the world's leading suppliers of Wi-Fi products for portable, battery-powered devices like Microchip, Broadcom Amber Wireless, ConnectBlue, LS Research, muRata and ST.
