Environmental Sensors

Environmental sensors are used to detect and measure environmental parameters like temperature, light intensity, pressure, humidity, and sound. It also includes proximity sensors to detect the presence and distance of persons, animals and objects.

Environmental sensors are instrumental devices designed to monitor various aspects of the surrounding environment, providing valuable data for a wide range of applications. From ensuring air quality and detecting pollutants to monitoring weather conditions and assessing environmental parameters, these sensors play a crucial role in understanding and safeguarding our surroundings.

The applications of environmental sensors are vast and multifaceted. In urban environments, air quality sensors are deployed to monitor pollution levels, enabling authorities to implement measures to mitigate pollution and protect public health. Similarly, weather sensors are employed in meteorological stations and weather forecasting centres to gather real-time data for weather prediction models, aiding in disaster preparedness and resource allocation.

In agricultural settings, soil moisture sensors play a vital role in irrigation management, helping farmers optimize water usage and maximize crop yields. Water quality sensors are utilized in water treatment plants, aquaculture facilities, and environmental monitoring stations to assess the quality of water bodies and ensure compliance with regulatory standards.

RRHxxx - Environmental and Air Quality Sensor (Coming Soon)

The RRHxxx is an integrated sensor module for the measurement of critical air quality parameters. Sensors for particulate matter (PM), total volatile organic compounds (TVOC), estimation of carbon dioxide (eCO2) optional nitrogen dioxide (NO2), optional ozone (O3), humidity (RH), and temperature (T), are combined in a single package.

The RRHxxx provides digital outputs for each sensor, which can measure parameters simultaneously. Output correction algorithms use the correlation between sensors to improve the accuracy of each measurement and identify detectable substances. In addition, control and arithmetic processing is done within the module, freeing resources on the host MCU and simplifying the implementation on the customer side

STMicroelectronics VL53L5CX FlightSense™

The VL53L5CX is a state of the art, Time-of-Flight (ToF), multizone ranging sensor enhancing the ST FlightSense product family. Housed in a miniature reflowable package, it integrates a SPAD array, physical infrared filters, and diffractive optical elements (DOE) to achieve the best ranging performance in various ambient lighting conditions with a range of cover glass materials. The use of a DOE above the vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) allows a square FoV to be projected onto the scene. The reflection of this light is focused by the receiver lens onto a SPAD array.

Unlike conventional IR sensors, the VL53L5CX uses ST's latest generation, direct ToF technology which allows absolute distance measurement whatever the target color and reflectance. It provides accurate ranging up to 400 cm and can work at fast speeds (60 Hz), which makes it the fastest, multizone, miniature ToF sensor on the market.

Proximity and Ranging Sensors Technical Guide

Proximity and ranging sensing are essential technologies that enable machines and devices to perceive and measure distances to objects or obstacles in their environment. These sensing mechanisms play a crucial role in various applications across industries, from robotics and automotive to consumer electronics and industrial automation.

Proximity sensing is primarily concerned with detecting the presence of objects within a certain range of a sensor. This technology is often used for functions such as touchless interfaces in smartphones, motion detection in security systems, and object detection in industrial automation. Proximity sensors can employ various methods, including infrared, capacitive, and ultrasonic, to accurately determine the presence or absence of an object in close proximity.
