Trends: Radar

Wireless communication is an important part of everyday life in the broad field of consumer electronics where Bluetooth, BLE, WLAN and other RF technologies already play a significant role. EBV Elektronik identified the most exciting trends in the sectors of:

Civil and Non-Civil Radar (MM)

Civil and non-civil radar

LDMOS and GaN technologies deliver high power, high efficiency and rugged solutions for radar applications

Without radar systems, for example, civil aviation in its present form would not be possible at all, and in the non-civil sector very important data for missile control and guidance would be missing. Without the appropriate RF semiconductors, today’s very compact and powerful devices could not be realised.

IFF-Air Traffic Management (MM)

IFF-Air Traffic Management

Both the IFF recognition system in military aircraft and the unique aircraft identification system are used in civil aviation for air traffic control

They are part of radar system that transmits a specific interrogation sequence, to which the other party responds with a radar signal calculated from the interrogation data. The calculation involves the use of a cryptographic key, which allows an unambiguous identification of the particular aircraft. Such systems can be realised in a compact manner using appropriate RF semiconductors.

Motion / level detection

Some radar systems are used in applications which very few people knew about until now

This area includes motion detection and level measurement or, more generally, applications involving the measurement of distance, angle and speed. By way of example, it is possible to measure the level of the contents in a sealed tank or container: a radar system attached to the top end sends a wave downwards, which is reflected by the contents (powder, granules, etc.). As with other radar systems, here too the propagation-time or the phase difference between the transmitted and the received signal determines the distance and thus the level to which the tank or container is filled. Since conventional passive infrared (PIR) detectors react to infrared radiation, they can be tricked using strong thermal insulation, which is a state of affairs that is unacceptable in safety-relevant areas and high-security units. A radar sensor on the other hand detects the position (and in the case of Doppler radars, the speed) of each object regardless of its temperature. Extremely compact radar sensors for motion detection can be realised using the RF semiconductors available today.

Traffic control

Radar applications can also help to improve the flow of traffic

Many car drivers have been involuntarily made aware of the fact that radar is used for traffic control, but few people know that radar applications can also help to improve the flow of traffic. Thus radar sensors determine the speed of vehicles and the traffic density. If required a traffic calculator based on this data prescribes a speed limit, since it is known that at a lower speed (and thus a lower safe distance) more vehicles can pass through a section in the same time. For particularly heavy traffic, the traffic computer may open an extra lane, usually the hard shoulder, to traffic.

Weather radar

Weather radar provides such essential basic data for the preparation of weather forecasts

That it is even installed in commercial aircraft, for example, in order to detect a storm front on the flightpath in good time. Without the appropriate highly reliable RF semiconductors, compact radar systems would not be feasible.
